I’m back. Sorry for not posting for the last week or so. Victoria managed to get a virus on my computer, so I had to take a bit of an unexpected hiatus. Now that the lappy is up and running again, hopefully I’ll be good to go for the rest of the summer. It’s not 100% fixed yet though. I have to see if I can get the wifi extender working again. We had to put Windows 7 on the laptop and the newest drivers that exist for the extender are for Vista. Not sure if that will do the trick or not. I’m posting from town until we see if we can get the extender working again. *grumble*
Anyway, I had to leave the island for a bit last week to go to Albany, New York for the annual classic hearse/ambulance/limo meet. It was lots of fun. It was good to see all of my car friends and see some neat cars that I haven’t seen before. Now that the meet in Albany is over, the focus is on Ohio. We’re hosting next year’s meet, so once the summer is over, our planning will be going into full gear.
Below are some of my favorite pics, along with the video from our sound and light show at the end of the meet.
The other day we drove out to Gilly’s in Snug Harbour for dinner. We try to get out here a couple of times a year. Though it’s a bit of a drive, the food is always great and the atmosphere is cozy, relaxed and awesome. Their food is all super fresh – including fish caught that day from the bay. If you’re ever in the area, it’s definitely worth checking out.
Watch for the sign, because the place is easy to miss.
It’s small, but the view is great inside.
It’s right at the harbour:
Much of their salad fixings and herbs are grown on site:
This boat wasn’t in the water, so I thought the plastic blue tablecloth was a nice touch. It gave the watery effect and hid the trailer.
I don’t even want to know how many layers of varnish are on this boat:
My favorite wooden one of the meet. It’s for sale. You can buy it for me if you want. lol
What a classy way to go around the bay:
My other favorite was this one. Back in the day, when our island still had its boathouse with the apartment on top, a 36 foot launch similar to this one was docked inside. All that’s left of it are the seats.
Here’s a video of one of the vintage racers speeding around the wharf:
Even though I was busy at the Sportbike Rally the day before, I made the drive on Sunday to Gravenhurst for day two of their annual classic and antique boat show. Normally this show is a one day event to show off restored wooden boats, but this year, they made it a two day event. Day one was still devoted to classic and antique wooden boats and day two had classic cars and classic fiberglass boats. Though the focus was fiberglass on Sunday, many amazing wooden boats were still on display. I took well over 100 pictures that day and I put a lot on my Flickr page, which you can find here. Below are some of my favorite fiberglass boats from the day. I’ll make other posts with my favorite wooden boats and cars. Enjoy!
Gotta love those fins!
I love this tiny water skiier:
More fabulous fins
I really love the color on this boat. The trailer looked perfect too.
We drove up to Action Island for the long weekend to open the cottage. Memorial Day weekend is always the true start of summer travel for us. Here we are driving on the New York State Thruway this past Friday evening with the canoe on the car. We are on the road again with more summer blogs coming soon.
I just got back from spending my spring break visiting Victoria and her husband in South Carolina. They live on Lake Murray, which is a huge inland lake down there. It’s 41 miles long, 14 miles wide, and 200 feet deep. Yeah, that is pretty big. It has some islands that are decent sized, but no one lives on them. Everyone just lives on the mainland. It’s a mix of summer cottages and permanent homes.
The scenery is similar, but different. The area is covered in tall familiar pine trees, but there’s no rocks and there are many more cottages – so many that they are all pretty close together. Also, because of the lake’s dirt bottom, it looks muddier than the clear and clean water of Georgian Bay. It’s somewhat like a muddy water south channel or like the Portage Lakes area in Ohio with a bit of Action Island thrown in there too. Even with those differences though, when you’re on the water, it all feels the same.
I took a lot of pictures and some videos too. I will start posting them super soon. Until then, here’s a few…
A porch great for hanging out in the day or in the evening:
One hell of a great room, which is totally unlike the cottage in height, amount of brick, electricity, and the amount of carpet and decorative pillows:
The view from the Muskoka chairs late at night with the lights reflecting off of the water is pretty sweet though.
I realized that I forgot to post this video last week. My bad. Anyway, here’s a video of some of the neat ice waterfalls that are coming off of the rocks headed south on highway 69 and highway 400. Even on a cloudy day in the winter, the cliffs of blasted rock look so pretty.
After the fire tower, we went down to the shore for a closer look at the ice. I figured we’d be fine walking out to the island, but our roommate wasn’t so sure of the ice’s thickness. After seeing so many snowmobiles pass us while we were hanging out on the town dock, he started to feel a bit more confident about our trek out on the ice.
